Call for Applications: Executive Director of the College for Bishops

The College for Bishops Board of Directors seeks applications for the position of Executive Director. The Executive director will rely on and testify to their faith in the saving power of Jesus Christ and will leverage their experience as a visionary leader to support and equip bishops in their roles as spiritual and executive leaders.

The mission of the College is:

“To provide opportunities for education and formation that will strengthen bishops in their personal lives, as diocesan leaders in God’s mission and in their vocation to God, as a community of bishop in service to The Episcopal Church”.

The Executive Director works under the oversight of the College's Board of Directors and in partnership with the Presiding Bishop. The next Executive Director of the College for Bishops will be a natural collaborator and an entrepreneurial leader, gathering church and secular experts to help bishops shape their identities and envision a church of the future. The next Executive Director should be familiar with adult learning principles. A vital responsibility in this role is to facilitate responsive content that balances critical, steadfast topics with time-sensitive and emergent conversations. A key posture for the next Executive Director is the commitment to fostering and convening learning communities built on safety and curiosity. The College’s programming and cohorts are built upon a culture of learning faithfully together, which includes applicability and supporting individual learning.

The 2021 strategic plan, adopted and implemented, positions the College as a vocational partner in learning for all bishops as they evolve in their ministries and meet the needs of their context and individual ministries. In this complex world, the support, formation, and identity creation of Episcopal bishops as executive and pastoral leaders is critical to regional vision and collaboration.

A core function of the College is to encourage collegiality and shared wisdom. Many bishops speak to the importance of fellowship and learning from their colleagues in the House of Bishops. Overlapping membership allows the College and House to co-create dynamic, responsive conversations. In Spring 2025, the House of Bishops has identified three programmatic priorities for the College that reflect the issues faced by current diocesan and executive leadership:

  1. Title IV training for bishops + support staff

  2. Living our Vows curriculum refresh

  3. Seminar on staff change, vision, and management

In addition to curriculum creation and faculty cultivation, this position includes general administration. This administration includes but is not limited to budget and planning and the development, coordination, and supervision of the college’s programs.

The current programs include Living Our Vows, New Bishops & Spouses, Conference on Orderly Transitions, Revitalize: Discernment for Growth, online conversations named “salons,” and Project Resource. Beyond the programming, the college offers the post-election 90-day companion, one-on-one coaching, CfB Connect online platform, a resource website, pastoral care, and support.

The Executive Director is expected to work closely with the board of directors, especially the executive committee. A network of advisors and consultants assists with training, curriculum, and special topics. Program faculty and presenters are critical partners in responding to the evolving needs of the entering cohorts.

A part-time associate for administration supports the Executive Director. A physical office and storage space is in New Bern, North Carolina. The next Executive Director will operate as a remote employee.

The primary language of this role is English. Fluency in Spanish is helpful but not required.

The College offers the Executive Director a compensation package composed of a salary for a half-time position, plus contributions to a retirement plan, cell phone reimbursement, remote technology hardware, and health benefits. We welcome applications from both lay and ordained people. The half-time salary for this role is expected to start at $75,000, though the College may consider other arrangements for the right candidate based on experience and fit.

A letter of interest, CV, references, and a response to the question “how would you both maintain what is good about the College for Bishops and what would you change to make it a stronger learning organization?” can be sent to apply@collegeforbishops.org. Applications are due by June 15th.  The Search Committee will review applications, and interviews will be conducted via Zoom. The new Executive Director will have a mutually agreed-upon start date in late 2025.
